10:15am – 11:15am
Course 3: DNP3 Protocol, Toney Sannella – Sage Designs, Inc.

Instructor Name: Tony Sannella
Utility Type: Water and Wastewater
Course Level: Beginner to Advanced

Overview
While Modbus is by far the most widely used protocol used in water and wastewater SCADA systems in the world, its limitations make it fall far short of the increasing demand for accurate, dependable historical data collections. In a modern SCADA system, historical data is collected at the remote site and transferred to the SCADA Master Station with quality and time stamped data providing a continuous historical record of events that occur between poll cycles.

DNP3, which has been in wide use in the electrical Transmission and Distribution industry in North America for many years, addresses these issues and others. It is an IEEE standard protocol which provides for control security and almost instantaneous notification of critical system information allowing for detailed examination of pressure spikes and fast response to intrusions or other time-sensitive events.

Tony Sannella will discuss the details of how DNP3 provides this functionality and briefly demonstrate its ability to recover historical data from an RTU that has temporarily lost communications with a SCADA Master Station.

Topics Covered
  • Brief Overview of DNP3 Origins and History
  • Typical Polling Schemes used
  • Sample Configuration
  • Discussion of DNP3 Data Logging Capabilities
  • Demonstration of DNP3 Historical Data Recovery

    Who Should Attend?
Technicians or Engineers involved with SCADA systems and Managers of Water and Waste Water utilities who are interested in SCADA systems where no data is lost due to interruptions in SCADA communications.

Tony Sannella, President of Sage Designs, Inc. has been supplying SCADA systems and has been teaching courses on SCADA related topics for over 20 years. He has been a guest lecturer on these topics at conferences in the US and at colleges and institutions in the US and Mexico. He teaches a 1-day DNP3 seminar which delves into technical details of how DNP3 messages are assembled and transmitted. Tony also consults with his customers using DNP3 to help design their DNP3 networks.
